Sub-Zero Mega Span: Four 151m Bolted Space Frame Coal Sheds Conquering Russian Far East Conditions
Advanced 3D non-linear modeling accounts for extreme unbalanced snow drifts and wind suction, coupled with calculated reverse camber to ensure zero excessive deflection under 3.0 kPa snow pressure.

Project Overview
Located at a strategic coal export and logistics terminal in the Russian Far East, this project was launched to comply with strict federal environmental dust-control mandates and expand transshipment capacity. The EPC contractor faced the formidable task of erecting four gigantic enclosed coal sheds (each 151m span × 277m length) before the deep winter freeze set in.
Under extreme conditions of -40°C combined with gale-force winds and blizzards, traditional high-altitude site welding was virtually impossible due to severe cold-cracking risks in the heat-affected zone and prohibitively complex preheating procedures. Moreover, the massive 151m column-free clear span had to sustain heavy Russian design snow loads (SP 20.13330, Snow Zone V reaching 3.0 kPa) as well as unbalanced snow drifting, posing serious structural deflection challenges.
Shijie Heavy Industry delivered an EAC/GOST-compliant, CNC-machined bolted ball-joint space frame system utilizing 09G2S / Q355E low-temperature high-impact structural steel. This achieved 100% mechanical bolt-together assembly on-site, entirely eliminating cryogenic welding hazards. Combined with high-precision camber engineering and thermal-sliding bearings, Shijie empowered the contractor to utilize ground pre-assembly with synchronized hydraulic jacking, breaking erection records in the frozen wilderness.

Mega-Span & Extreme Snow Resistance (SP 20.13330 Compliance)
Advanced 3D non-linear modeling accounts for extreme unbalanced snow drifts and wind suction, coupled with calculated reverse camber to ensure zero excessive deflection under 3.0 kPa snow pressure.
Zero-Welding Cryogenic Assembly
100% high-precision CNC-machined bolted ball joints completely avoid the fatal risk of cold brittleness and weld cracking in sub-zero Siberian/Far East conditions.
09G2S Cryogenic High-Strength Steel
Utilizing 09G2S (equivalent to Q355E) with certified Charpy V-notch impact toughness tested at -40°C, ensuring high structural ductility and zero brittle fracture risk.
Multi-Directional Thermal Sliding Joints
Engineered sliding bearings absorb excessive expansion and contraction caused by annual 70°C temperature shifts, safely releasing lateral forces on retaining concrete walls.
Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty
Proven technical interventions to keep your project on spec, on budget, and on schedule
Massive 151m span subjected to severe seasonal temperature swings (from -40°C in winter to +30°C in summer), generating extreme thermal expansion/contraction stresses.
Integrated low-friction spherical sliding bearings with ± 60mm displacement tolerance, allowing micro horizontal sliding to safely isolate and release thermal stress.
Extreme heavy snow drifting (up to 3.0 kPa) on curved roofs causing asymmetric localized overloading and buckling hazards.
Reinforced critical chord and web member profiles along snow-accumulation zones based on SP 20 Annex G algorithms, combined with snow-retaining guides at eaves to prevent sudden ice avalanches.
Sorting tens of thousands of structural components on an open job site covered by thick snow and frost, threatening construction schedules.
Applied deep-etched laser barcodes and cryogenic QR labels onto each component; pre-sorted and packaged parts by hydraulic jacking modules for direct scanned identification.
Any structural engineer will confirm that a 151-meter clear span pushes the outer edge of space-frame engineering. Executing four of them back-to-back under the punishing conditions of the Russian Far East—facing -40°C chills and stringent snow load requirements under SP 20—felt like high-stakes gambling. Our primary concern was site welding; executing reliable high-altitude structural welds in severe freezing conditions is practically impossible and technically unsafe.
Shijie Heavy Industry proved to be the decisive partner for this project. They supplied an EAC-certified, CNC-machined bolted ball-joint system manufactured from cold-tough 09G2S steel that completely replaced field welding with high-torque mechanical bolting. The fabrication tolerance was kept within 1.0 mm, which was incredible. My team assembled the large frame sections on the ground and hoisted them with synchronized hydraulic jacks without a single node binding. Their sliding bearing design completely dissipated the thermal contraction of the 151-meter structure. Shijie delivered world-class heavy steel engineering that conquered one of the harshest winters in port construction history.
