Multi-Tier Structural Steel Petrochemical Pipe Racks for Mega Coastal Refinery & Chemical Hub in Map Ta Phut, Thailand

Integrated Tekla BIM with multi-tier piping stress models, ensuring tens of thousands of bolt connections aligned seamlessly without field reaming or torch modification.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

Located in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Port zone along the Gulf of Thailand, this mega-scale refining and petrochemical revamp demanded the fabrication of over 12,000 tons of heavy multi-tier process pipe racks weaving through active chemical units. In this tropical coastal environment, continuous high humidity (averaging >80%), seasonal monsoon downpours, and intense marine chloride exposure pose severe long-term corrosion hazards. Moreover, with high-pressure hydrocarbon, steam, and chemical lines crisscrossing the complex, any deflection in the steel trestles or alignment error on pipe supports can trigger catastrophic pipeline fatigue stresses. The project operated under uncompromising QA/QC mandates governed by AISC 360, AWS D1.1, ASME B31.3, and ASTM A123.

Facing congested site constraints and tight shutdown windows where conventional erection would cause logistical gridlock, Shijie Heavy Industry supplied prefabricated heavy steel trestles, cross-braced portal frames, and pipe shoe modules with flawless hot-dip galvanized (HDG) protection and duplex polyurethane coatings. Through full-scale 3D Tekla model clash detection, shop trial pre-assemblies, and precision CNC robotic processing, Shijie guaranteed 100% bolt-hole coincidence and zero site reaming. Delivered with waterproof QR-coded component logistics, the entire multi-tier framework was erected with zero hot-work permits in live operating zones, topping out 3 weeks ahead of schedule.

01

Sub-Millimeter Clash-Free Fabrication

Integrated Tekla BIM with multi-tier piping stress models, ensuring tens of thousands of bolt connections aligned seamlessly without field reaming or torch modification.

02

Duplex Coastal Tropical Anti-Corrosion

Heavy-duty hot-dip galvanizing exceeding ASTM A123 coupled with a UV-resistant polyurethane topcoat (ISO 12944 C5-M compliant) ensures a 30+ year service life against monsoon rains and marine salt fog.

03

Zero-Hot-Work Erection in Hazardous Zones

Fully bolt-together connection designs eliminated on-site flame cutting and welding inside volatile refinery operating zones, substantially decreasing project HSE risk.

04

Smart Tagging & Lean Site Logistics

Applied weatherproof QR coding matched to structural erection phases, slashing on-site unloading, sorting, and staging time by 40%.

Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty

THE CHALLENGE

Tight physical constraints within an operating plant make sorting and staging heavy members impossible without shutting down access roads.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Established JIT (Just-In-Time) sequenced packaging tagged with weatherproof QR codes, allowing crawler cranes to pick and hoist parts directly from flatbeds to final positions.

THE CHALLENGE

Continuous monsoon downpours and humid marine salt spray degrade paint systems during transport and storage, causing early peeling.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Implemented ASTM A123 hot-dip galvanizing with edge radiusing followed by automated sweep-blasting and C5-M epoxy-polyurethane duplex coating in controlled environmental bays.

THE CHALLENGE

High-pressure pipe thermal expansion imparts severe cyclic horizontal loads, risking fatigue failure on rigid structural splices.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Engineered slotted friction-grip slip joints and heavy gusset-stiffened moment frames, dissipating expansion surges while strictly maintaining overall frame stability.

CLIENT VOICE

Executing a 12,000-ton pipe rack expansion inside an active petrochemical hub like Map Ta Phut is a high-wire act. We had zero room for site storage, and securing hot-work permits adjacent to live hydrocarbon lines is exceptionally complex. Any minor fabrication error requiring torch cutting or re-drilling on-site would instantly jeopardize our critical turnaround window.

Shijie Heavy Industry gave us total peace of mind. Across thousands of structural members, their CNC fabrication was unbelievably precise—every beam splice and bracing plate aligned on the first attempt with zero reaming. Their duplex hot-dip galvanized and coating system resisted the harsh monsoon salt spray without a blemish. But what impressed us most was their sequencing and QR-code packaging system: our cranes lifted members straight from the trailers into position. Shijie helped us top out the main corridors 3 weeks ahead of schedule, with flawless safety records. They are truly the top-tier steel fabrication partner for complex petrochemical projects.
