40m Monolithic Rack-Supported ASRS Hub in Singapore: Sub-Millimeter Stacker Rail Plumbness and Fast-Track BCA-Compliant Turnkey Erection

Fabricated with multi-station CNC continuous punch lines and verified via shop 3D laser-scan trial grids, suppressing cumulative verticality stack-up within ± 1.5mm to ensure high-speed stacker cranes run without friction or track wear.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

Located in Singapore's western maritime and logistics corridor, this mega Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) hub represents the pinnacle of high-density supply chain infrastructure. Soaring 40 meters high, the structure utilizes a "rack-supported" structural typology, where the dense high-bay racking directly acts as the primary load-bearing skeleton for the roof and exterior insulated cladding. For the EPC construction director, managing this build under Singapore's regulatory environment was fraught with anxiety. With site labor, crane rentals, and safety supervisor overhead running at brutal hourly rates, any schedule delay bleeds cash.

More critically, high-speed automated stacker cranes (SRMs) travel along the narrow 40-meter-tall aisles at speeds exceeding 240 m/min. If the cumulative plumbness of the steel uprights drifted by even 2 millimeters, the automated cranes would trip safety sensors, jam in the racks, or chew their guide rails, halting millions of dollars in automated logistics throughput. On top of this, Singapore's Building and Construction Authority (BCA) strictly enforces zero-tolerance site safety—any unapproved field cutting, torch reaming, or overhead welding would trigger immediate stop-work orders.

Shijie Heavy Industry delivered an integrated, high-precision engineering solution that eliminated site adjustments entirely. Utilizing 5-axis CNC multi-station beam and tube punching lines, Shijie locked upright bolt-hole tolerances strictly within ± 0.5 mm. Through dynamic finite element modeling, the structural framework was engineered to absorb localized wind gust shears transferred from the building envelope without distorting the internal automated rail alignment. Shipped in phased 40HQ containerized modules with waterproof QR-code traceability matching the site crane radius, all 11,000 tons of structural racking went up 100% bolted. The high-speed stackers cleared commissioning on their very first run, allowing the contractor to hand the facility over for automated commissioning 16 days ahead of schedule.

01

Sub-Millimeter Plumbness for High-Speed SRMs

Fabricated with multi-station CNC continuous punch lines and verified via shop 3D laser-scan trial grids, suppressing cumulative verticality stack-up within ± 1.5mm to ensure high-speed stacker cranes run without friction or track wear.

02

100% Bolted Monolithic Rack-Supported System

The structural racking serves as the main building frame, utilizing precision-milled connecting brackets that bolt together without field welding, fully compliant with Singapore BCA's strict clean-site safety codes.

03

Decoupled Wind-Load Structural Engineering

Engineered special slotted spring-washer connectors between the exterior sandwich-panel purlins and internal racking, absorbing external storm-wind deflections without transmitting twisting stress to the automated crane guides.

04

QR-Coded JIT Urban Container Logistics

All components were packed into 40HQ containers strictly sequenced by building bays and labeled with waterproof QR codes, allowing crawler cranes to lift directly from the trailer bed without on-site sorting congestion.

Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty

Proven technical interventions to keep your project on spec, on budget, and on schedule

THE CHALLENGE

In a 40m rack-supported structure, minor fabrication deviations multiply aloft; any rail misalignment jams automated stacker cranes.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Utilized continuous multi-axis CNC punching and 3D laser-tracker trial assemblies in-shop, holding full-height plumbness well within FEM 15620 standards.

THE CHALLENGE

Singapore labor and crane rentals cost a fortune; BCA inspectors issue immediate stop-work orders for on-site torch-reaming or welding aloft.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Pre-machined all flanged splices and baseplates to zero-tolerance fits, shipping 100% bolted components that assembled aloft without field adjustments.

THE CHALLENGE

Coastal storm gusts buffet the 40m exterior walls; transferred lateral loads threaten to twist the narrow automated aisles inside.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Configured a specialized dynamic sliding sub-frame that decouples the exterior insulated sandwich panels from the core stacker crane uprights.

CLIENT VOICE

A 40m rack-supported build in Singapore leaves zero room for error: crane costs are brutal, BCA bans site hot-work, and a 2mm drift jams high-speed stacker cranes. Shijie eliminated all of it. Over 11,000 tons of steel bolted together seamlessly with zero torch cuts, holding 40m plumbness within 1mm. Our stackers ran at full speed on the first pass, and we handed over 16 days early. Pure engineering brilliance.
