135m Total Frontage Dual-Bay Wide-Body Aviation Maintenance Hangar in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia: Precision Deflection Control on Center-Post Girders, Desert Thermal Stress Relief, and Fast-Track Turnkey Erection
Engineered multi-stage reverse camber into both 65-meter header trusses, neutralizing self-weight and hanging crane loads to ensure independent, bind-free sliding door operation across both bays.

Project Overview
Located at the international aviation hub in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, this mega-hangar was engineered to accommodate concurrent heavy maintenance (C/D Checks) for multiple Code-E wide-body aircraft (such as Boeing 777/Airbus A350). The facility features an expansive 135-meter total frontage split into two dedicated wide-body servicing bays by a heavy structural steel center-post support column. In the arid desert environment of the Arabian Peninsula, mega-span aviation facilities face severe structural hurdles: daytime surface temperatures exceeding +55°C, relentless thermal expansion-contraction cycles, intense desert wind uplift loads, and sandstorm abrasion.
The critical engineering barrier centered on the differential deflection control of the dual-span entrance header trusses and the axial load stability of the central column. With two independent, multi-leaf sliding hangar door systems meeting at the center divider, any excessive sag under suspended cranes or differential thermal expansion under the blistering sun would jam the door tracks, risking millions of dollars in aircraft downtime. The project complied with rigid international standards including AISC 360, AWS D1.1, and Saudi Building Code (SBC 301/306).
Shijie Heavy Industry engineered a high-rigidity structural system comprising heavy welded box girders, three-dimensional spatial roof trusses, and a heavy-duty central lattice column. Utilizing finite element reverse camber calculations, 3D laser-tracked trial pre-assembly, and robotic submerged arc welding, Shijie controlled total truss deflection within L/1000. Delivered with specialized heat-reflective polyurethane coatings and 100% pre-drilled bolted connections, the roof structure was hoisted smoothly without site torch-cutting, topping out 18 days ahead of schedule.

Dual-Span Camber & Center-Post Deflection Control
Engineered multi-stage reverse camber into both 65-meter header trusses, neutralizing self-weight and hanging crane loads to ensure independent, bind-free sliding door operation across both bays.
Thermal-Stress Decoupling Bearings
Integrated low-friction spherical slide bearings at the perimeter columns and central truss connection, releasing massive axial thermal expansion forces under +55°C solar radiation.
3D Laser-Calibrated Zero-Tolerance Fabrication
Pre-assembled the heavy center column and multi-span truss nodes in-shop using 3D laser trackers, guaranteeing 100% bolt-hole alignment aloft with zero field reaming.
Dynamic Overhead Crane Fatigue Engineering
Heavy box-welded nodes and central lattice column joints optimized for cyclic fatigue loads induced by multiple suspended aviation maintenance overhead bridge cranes.
Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty
Proven technical interventions to keep your project on spec, on budget, and on schedule
Excessive vertical deflection on the dual header trusses can distort the top door tracks, jamming sliding doors at the center post.
Fabricated independent reverse cambers into both 65m trusses via non-linear FEA, verifying load tests to keep operating deflection strictly within L/1000.
Extreme desert temperature swings (+55°C days, rapid night drop) generate severe thermal expansion thrust across the continuous 135m frontage.
Installed custom low-friction PTFE sliding spherical bearings at perimeter column tops and central nodal interfaces to safely absorb thermal movement.
Assembling heavy box trusses and a multi-ton central column in open desert gust conditions risks structural misalignment and severe delays.
Staged synchronous modular ground pre-assembly, lifting dual roof blocks with hydraulic strand-jacks to dock onto the center column flawlessly.
When you're building a dual-bay wide-body hangar with a 135-meter total frontage in the middle of the Saudi desert, deflection isn't just a line in a calculation book—it's the life or death of the facility. With an essential structural center column dividing the bays, both independent sets of 24-meter-tall sliding doors meet right at the middle. If the header trusses sag by even 15 millimeters or the center post tilts slightly under thermal loads, the sliding doors freeze, grounding multi-million-dollar Boeing 777s and Airbus A350s.
Shijie Heavy Industry proved to be an exceptional structural engineering partner. Their pre-camber calculations across both spans and the heavy center-post node fabrication were astonishingly precise. The moment the dead loads were fully transferred from the hydraulic jacks, both 65-meter trusses leveled out exactly along the design baseline, and the center column remained perfectly plumb. In our extreme 50°C desert heat, their shop-drilled bolt splices lined up seamlessly aloft, requiring zero reaming and zero cutting torches. Delivering 18 days ahead of our baseline schedule secured our MRO commissioning timeline. Shijie delivers true world-class engineering.
