68,000 sqm Multi-Span Modular Structural Steel Platform Canopies for Intermodal Railway Transit Hub in Egypt

100% shop CNC drilling and modular fabrication ensured connections locked instantly under strict rail curfew hours without site welding or reaming.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

Serving as a strategic multimodal passenger and freight rail junction in Egypt, this sprawling hub required over 68,000 square meters of high-durability structural steel platform canopies running alongside active mainline tracks and freight yards. From the EPC contractor’s perspective, the psychological stress point was acute: operating in a harsh desert-fringe climate with intense solar radiation and seasonal sandstorms, all while under extreme pressure to erect thousands of tons of steel across live rail lines without disrupting existing train timetables. Any delayed assembly, dropped component, or on-site welding rework would halt regional rail traffic and trigger severe liquidated damages.

Shijie Heavy Industry delivered a pre-engineered, 100% bolted modular steel canopy system designed for rapid night-window installation. Utilizing automated CNC plasma cutting, robot-welded tubular truss modules, and shop-applied high-durability polyurethane coatings, Shijie achieved sub-millimeter connection alignment across all platforms. Delivered via an indexed logistics sequencing plan, each canopy bay was hoisted and fully secured during short operational track curfews without field reaming or torch cutting, enabling the client to complete all platform lines 2.5 weeks ahead of the rigid commissioning deadline.

Precision Bolted Trackside Erection

100% shop CNC drilling and modular fabrication ensured connections locked instantly under strict rail curfew hours without site welding or reaming.

02

Desert-Resistant Heavy Coating

Multi-coat polyurethane barrier engineered to prevent chalking, UV degradation, and silica-sand erosion under Egyptian high-temperature desert climates.

03

High-Dynamic Vibration Resilience

Structural joints and wing trusses verified under dynamic finite element analysis to endure recurring aerodynamic turbulence and vibration from passing trains.

04

Staged Curfew Logistics Sequencing

Steel packages shipped in precise track-by-track erection lots with weatherproof QR identifiers, slashing trackside staging chaos and crane idle time.

THE CHALLENGE

Erecting structures over active rail lines risks catastrophic derailments or penalties if trains are delayed by poor fit-up.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Executed full 3D Tekla modeling and factory trial pre-assemblies; delivered self-locating bolted connections requiring zero field adjustments during brief track curfews.

THE CHALLENGE

Harsh desert temperature swings (+48°C day to cold nights) cause thermal movement across 68,000 sqm of continuous canopies.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Configured slotted expansion slide joints and low-friction sliding bearings along long-span platform headers, safely absorbing longitudinal thermal contraction.

THE CHALLENGE

Intense silica sand accumulation on horizontal structural profiles accelerates corrosion and paint abrasion.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Utilized closed structural round tubes for main trusses and designed sloped web surfaces to prevent dust pooling, backed by an ASTM-standard C4/C5 coating spec.

CLIENT VOICE

Anyone in railway construction will tell you our worst nightmare is blowing a track-possession window. You’ve got hundreds of crew members and cranes staged along the tracks under live catenary wires, with dispatch giving you precisely three hours to get in and out. In past projects with other vendors, a two-centimeter hole mismatch or a jammed truss meant halting regional train traffic—and facing brutal penalties.

When Shijie’s shipment arrived, our local team was skeptical: could such massive platform canopies really go up with zero field welding? But the moment our cranes lifted the first frame, the tolerances settled flawlessly into place. Pin inserted, bolts torqued, and we didn’t even have to use a crowbar. What really saved us was their packaging: open a container, and inside is exactly what belongs on that specific bay tonight—no rummaging through piles under floodlights in the desert dust. Shijie doesn’t just fabricate steel; they genuinely understand how a chaotic railway site works.
