86,000 sqm Modular Structural Steel Roof Canopy: High-Efficiency Terminal Expansion in East Africa

Designed repetitive multi-span spatial truss units that balanced large open spans for boarding concourses with rapid bolt-together ground pre-assembly.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

As one of the fastest-growing passenger and cargo transit hubs in East Africa, this international airport terminal expansion required an expansive, pragmatic, and highly functional roof structure covering over 86,000 square meters. Operating in an East African highland plateau presents unique challenges: intense ultraviolet radiation at over 2,300 meters altitude, sharp diurnal temperature swings, and severe restrictions on local heavy manufacturing capacities. For the EPC contractor, the biggest operational fear was "cross-border supply chain misalignment"—where any missing components or fabrication misfits would require expensive international air-freight replacements, bringing whole erection lines to a standstill.

Shijie Heavy Industry delivered an integrated modular space truss and portal frame roof system engineered for extreme assembly ease. By conducting 100% digital 3D model trial fits and pre-assembling modules in-factory, we achieved zero-defect bolt-together connectivity on-site. Coupled with a color-coded waterproof tagging system and containerized packing, local crews assembled repetitive multi-span bays with standard hydraulic equipment, completing structural roof installation 3 weeks ahead of the international delivery schedule.

01

Pragmatic Modular Spatial Trusses

Designed repetitive multi-span spatial truss units that balanced large open spans for boarding concourses with rapid bolt-together ground pre-assembly.

02

Zero-Rework Cross-Border Assurance

100% CNC robotic cutting and shop trial assemblies ensured every bolt hole coincided with zero requirement for site reaming or field modifications.

03

High-Altitude UV & Weather Resistance

Applied an industrial polyurethane finish engineered to resist strong highland UV degradation, chalking, and severe daily temperature cycling.

04

Lean Containerized Packing

Components nested via 3D packing software into shipping containers by bay sequence, reducing sea-freight volume and preventing ocean-transit scratching.

Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty

Proven technical interventions to keep your project on spec, on budget, and on schedule

THE CHALLENGE

Cross-border supply chain risks: any component mismatch or damage in transit halts erection indefinitely due to long reshipment cycles.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Carried out 100% factory trial assemblies; packaged members in strict bay-by-bay sequences with steel cradles and rubber dampeners, backed by redundant hardware spare kits.

THE CHALLENGE

High-altitude plateau climate (strong UV and sharp day-night temperature swings) accelerates coating chalking and thermal structural fatigue.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Utilized high-elasticity polyurethane coatings with high UV blocking properties; configured slotted sliding bearings at column tops to freely release thermal movements.

THE CHALLENGE

Local labor teams have limited experience with complex curved framing, risking slow assembly and construction bottlenecks.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Standardized straight-line truss modularity paired with color-coded, waterproof QR tags matching 3D erection guides, enabling intuitive, error-free assembly.

CLIENT VOICE

When executing a mega-scale airport terminal in East Africa, supply chain certainty is everything. Shipping heavy steel thousands of miles to an inland highland plateau means you cannot afford a single missing part, warped beam, or misaligned bolt hole—waiting for overseas replacements would destroy the project schedule and cost millions.

Shijie Heavy Industry proved to be the most reliable fabrication partner we’ve worked with. Their modular truss design was thoroughly rational, and their shop fabrication precision was flawless. Across more than 14,000 tons of structural steelwork, our local crews experienced zero on-site modifications or re-drilling. The color-coded containerized packaging was exceptionally organized; trucks unloaded members directly onto the staging lines without chaos. Thanks to their lean logistics and plug-and-play assembly, we completed the 86,000-square-meter roof framework 3 weeks ahead of our rigid completion date. Shijie delivers true international-grade engineering rigor.
