45,000-Ton Geothermal Power Plant Boiler Steelwork in Kenya: High-Seismic Thermal Balance and H2S Protection
The boiler tower structure incorporates heavy-duty vertical cross-bracing and moment-resisting connections to safely counter ground acceleration in volcanic regions.

Project Overview
Located in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, this 45,000-ton geothermal and thermal power facility serves as a vital base-load energy anchor for the national grid. Developing heavy industrial power infrastructure in active volcanic rift terrain creates specific engineering challenges. Plant operators prioritize operational stability and structural longevity. They face three primary technical concerns: ensuring the multi-tier tower frames absorb intense seismic tremors without structural deformation, managing severe thermal expansion and dynamic vibration caused by high-pressure steam pipes, and protecting structural steel from accelerated corrosion caused by geothermal hydrogen sulfide vapors. Shijie Heavy Industry addressed these regional conditions with a specialized power-plant steelwork solution. We engineered deep-flange rigid moment frames and cross-braced towers capable of safely suspending boiler loads and steam equipment. The framework incorporates multi-directional sliding expansion shoes to release cyclic thermal stress without damaging structural nodes. All exposed steel members received an industrial hot-dip galvanized and heavy-duty epoxy coating system to shield against geothermal gases. Utilizing a 100% pre-engineered bolted design, our erection crew completed structural topping-out 40 days ahead of schedule, facilitating on-time boiler turbine testing.

Rift-Zone Seismic Rigidity
The boiler tower structure incorporates heavy-duty vertical cross-bracing and moment-resisting connections to safely counter ground acceleration in volcanic regions.
Thermal Expansion Management
Precision sliding baseplates release cyclic thermal strains from high-temperature geothermal steam conduits, preventing fatigue fractures in supporting beams.
Geothermal Gas Armor
Structural members are treated with specialized hot-dip galvanization and chemical-resistant barrier topcoats, preventing rapid sulfide deterioration in humid outdoor environments.
Pre-Engineered Field Erection
Shop-fabricated components with clear barcode sequencing enabled crane crews to bolt multi-tiered frames together systematically without on-site cutting.
Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty
Proven technical interventions to keep your project on spec, on budget, and on schedule
Geothermal steam pipes create significant thermal expansion and vibration, threatening weld fatigue across multi-story steel towers.
Integrated multi-directional sliding pipe supports and elastomeric dampening pads to safely release operational movements.
Ambient geothermal gases containing hydrogen sulfide accelerate atmospheric oxidation and corrode load-bearing columns.
Applied hot-dip galvanization beneath an aliphatic epoxy coating system, extending the operational life of the structure.
Anyone who works in the Rift Valley knows that volcanic steam is brutal on steel infrastructure. You smell sulfur in the air constantly, and untreated metal begins flaking within months. What worried our inspection team most before installation wasn't just the rust, but how these massive steel towers would behave once pressurized steam at 260 degrees Celsius surged through the network. During our first full-load test last month, I monitored the expansion joints on the upper boiler tier personally. The pipe brackets glided across Shijie’s low-friction slide shoes without any binding or loud clattering, which kept secondary bending moments off our main girders. Another practical detail worth noting was the hole alignment up on the scaffolding. Working at heights in gusty canyon winds is challenging; you cannot easily drag cutting torches up forty meters to re-drill holes that don't match. Every bolt dropped straight into place during assembly. That level of manufacturing discipline saved our site crews immense frustration.
