80m Clear-Span Arch Vault Bulk Sheds at Indonesian Deep-Water Port: Defying Marine Salt-Spray Corrosion and Wet-Season Demurrage Deadlines

Engineered with continuous spatial triangular tube trusses, maximizing interior vertical clearance for stacker-reclaimers and payload tipping trucks while minimizing foundation mass.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

Located at a critical deep-water maritime logistics hub in Indonesia, this mega transit complex handles millions of tons of dry bulk cargo annually, transferring materials directly between ocean-going bulk carriers and processing centers. For the port authority and EPC construction team, the project had two major commercial stress points: astronomical ship demurrage costs and extreme tropical marine corrosion. Berth space at the terminal is leased at premium rates; every extra day spent installing roof arches above active ship loaders risked halting conveyor trials, which triggers demurrage fines of up to tens of thousands of dollars per vessel per day. Furthermore, the equatorial coastal site exposes steel to constant saline sea breezes, high humidity, and abrasive bulk mineral dust, which can cause unprotected steel structures and standard zinc roofing to rust within two to three years.

Shijie Heavy Industry implemented a modular, high-rigidity structural system using spatial tubular barrel-vault arches and C5-M marine-grade protection. By pre-assembling arch truss segments with self-locating bolted sleeve connections in the factory, Shijie eliminated on-site welding near flammable bulk conveyor belts. Every steel member received a composite duplex coating—hot-dip galvanizing paired with thick aliphatic polyurethane—backed by 4-mil fluorocarbon-coated corrugated metal sheets. Transported in phased container and flat-rack packages matched to berth crane radius charts, the arched bays were lifted directly into position. The entire warehouse complex was completed 20 days ahead of the monsoon berthing window, enabling immediate commissioning of the enclosed conveyor galleries without incurring demurrage penalties.

01

80m Column-Free Space Truss Arch

Engineered with continuous spatial triangular tube trusses, maximizing interior vertical clearance for stacker-reclaimers and payload tipping trucks while minimizing foundation mass.

02

Zero-Hot-Work Coastal Rapid Assembly

Fabricated with self-aligning flanged sleeve connections, allowing heavy arch spans to be assembled on ground aprons and hoisted directly without on-site cutting or welding near coal/mineral conveyor routes.

03

ISO 12944 C5-M Coastal Corrosion Resistance

Steel members received a deep hot-dip galvanized primer coupled with high-build aliphatic polyurethane, providing over 25 years of design life in aggressive maritime tropical salt spray.

04

Integrated Aerodynamic Ridge Ventilation

Equipped with continuous natural ridge ventilators along the crown, purging internal humidity and airborne cargo dust while maintaining storm-proof water tightness during intense equatorial downpours.

Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty

Proven technical interventions to keep your project on spec, on budget, and on schedule

THE CHALLENGE

Tight vessel arrival schedules: delays in warehouse completion stall conveyor commissioning, causing tens of thousands of dollars in daily demurrage.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Standardized modular arch trusses with self-locating guide pins; components were pre-sorted for immediate hook-lifting directly from dockside delivery flatbeds.

THE CHALLENGE

Aggressive marine salt mist and tropical humidity rapidly corrode steel trusses and roof sheeting, causing premature perforation and roof failure.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Applied hot-dip galvanizing with an aliphatic PU barrier coat (C5-M); roof cladding utilized AZ150 high-build fluorocarbon-coated steel sheeting.

THE CHALLENGE

Massive 80m arch trusses risk out-of-plane buckling during site hoisting on a tight quay apron with high coastal crosswinds.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Engineered pre-assembled spatial rigid bays with temporary stiffening spandrels; verified center-of-gravity lift lugs to guarantee stable single-hook picks.

CLIENT VOICE

Erecting an 80-meter clear-span transit shed at an active deep-water port is a high-stakes race against vessel demurrage deadlines. Panamax bulk carriers were already queued up offshore; if the roof framework wasn't completed and conveyor dry-runs were delayed, vessel demurrage costs would have drained our margins at tens of thousands of dollars a day. In previous builds, fabricators delivered warped arches that forced our crews to cut and weld in strong coastal crosswinds—a massive safety hazard near rubber conveyor belts.

Shijie’s structural steel precision on this jobsite was unmatched. We pre-assembled the heavy arch bays on the quay ground, hoisted them over the retaining walls, and the locator pins clicked straight into the bearing seats. Across thousands of bolt sets, our crew didn't strike a single arc or force a single hole aloft. Even under aggressive maritime salt air, their heavy-duty coating arrived flawless without transit scratching. Handing over 20 days ahead of schedule kept the terminal running like clockwork and eliminated our demurrage fears entirely. Outstanding engineering.
