36,000 sqm Climate-Controlled Agro-Processing Complex in Ghana: Thermal-Bridge Isolation, Tropical Storm Proofing, and Fast-Track Turnkey Commissioning

Pre-engineered high-density elastomeric thermal pads at all structural steel interfaces eliminate radiant heat transmission, preventing internal condensation drips and reducing refrigeration power consumption by up to 25%.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Project Overview

Located in Ghana’s fertile agricultural export belt, this mega agro-processing facility provides continuous climate-controlled sorting, drying, packaging, and cold storage for high-value export produce. For the agro-industrial client and EPC management, the commercial stakes were tightly bound to the seasonal harvest clock. In equatorial West Africa, intense ambient radiation pushes exterior roof temperatures past +60°C, accompanied by sudden tropical monsoons with torrential rainfall.

The primary operational anxiety was structural thermal bridging and envelope leakage. If the structural steel frame lacked integrated thermal break isolators, radiant heat would bleed into the low-temperature workshops, overloading industrial chillers, skyrocketing electricity costs, and causing condensation dripping that ruins dry produce. Compounding this risk, local site construction in inland West Africa lacks precision fabrication gear; if long-span curved arch trusses or purlins arrived misaligned, field cutting aloft would destroy anti-corrosion coatings and delay handover past the harvest date, leaving perishable crops to rot in the fields.

Shijie Heavy Industry engineered a factory-integrated, climate-shielded structural steel solution. Combining multi-span portal frames with large-span tubular barrel-vault sheds, Shijie integrated thermal-break neoprene isolation pads directly into all purlin-to-rafter connections. Envelope panels were precision-milled with continuous double-lock standing seams to guarantee watertightness during tropical cloudbursts. Shipped in color-coded, weather-tagged container batches synchronized with field crane positions, over 5,200 tons of structural steel were erected 100% bolted aloft without flame cutting. The cold-chain processing facility was completed 21 days ahead of the main harvest intake, giving the client complete confidence for full-capacity commercial export operations.

01

Integrated Thermal-Bridge Isolation

Pre-engineered high-density elastomeric thermal pads at all structural steel interfaces eliminate radiant heat transmission, preventing internal condensation drips and reducing refrigeration power consumption by up to 25%.

02

Monsoon-Grade 360° Standing-Seam Envelope

Roof and canopy structures feature continuous roll-formed double-standing seam panels with concealed clips, eliminating exposed fastener holes and ensuring total watertightness during heavy West African rainstorms.

03

Precision Multi-Span Arch Fit-Up

Curved truss members were processed on 3D CNC pipe benders and checked via shop laser coordinates, allowing long-span barrel vaults to bolt together aloft with zero prying or field hole-reaming.

04

Equatorial UV & Chemical-Resistant Coating

Steel surfaces underwent Sa 2.5 heavy blasting and high-build polyurethane sealing, resisting agricultural dust, natural fruit acids, and intense equatorial sunlight without blistering or fading.

THE CHALLENGE

+60°C roof surface heat conducts into cold storage; steel thermal bridging causes condensation drops that spoil dry agricultural cargo.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Integrated high-density neoprene thermal barrier strips between purlins and panels, paired with continuous ridge-exhaust natural ventilation.

THE CHALLENGE

Remote Ghanaian interior lacks heavy machining tools; misplaced holes aloft would stall crane hoisting and ruin the harvest window.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

CNC-cut all flanged connections with precision guide dowels, conducting 3D laser trial fit-ups in-factory to ensure 100% first-pass bolting.

THE CHALLENGE

Sudden equatorial monsoons produce immense wind-uplift and torrential sheet-flow, risking warehouse roof tear-off and internal flooding.

SJ ENGINEERED SOLUTION

Configured deep-valley 360° double-lock standing seam roofing with concealed high-strength sliding clips that absorb wind-uplift forces.

CLIENT VOICE

Building in Ghana meant racing against the harvest window. Any thermal leak aloft would drop condensation and ruin our produce, while misplaced bolt holes would halt remote cranes. Shijie solved it: 36,000 sqm of curved steel bolted aloft with zero torch cuts, holding bone-dry and drip-free during violent rainstorms. Delivering 21 days early saved our entire season.
