1,280m Continuous Steel Box Girder Highway Bridge in Iraq: Navigating River Currents, Live Traffic, and Sub-Millimeter Splice Precision
Segmental joints were trial-matched in sequential three-girder batches in-shop using 3D coordinate scanning, guaranteeing zero air-gap mismatches during river crane lifts.

Project Overview
Traversing a major river basin and weaving over dense ground-level arterial highways in Iraq, this dual-lane urban expressway bridge was a high-stakes undertaking for the EPC contractor. The site posed a logistics and safety gauntlet: scorching summer ambient heat exceeding +50°C, turbulent seasonal river currents, and the continuous flow of heavy regional cargo trucks directly beneath the active erection path. The contractor’s greatest dread was an on-site fit-up mismatch—if massive 60-ton prefabricated steel box girder segments failed to align smoothly over the water or above congested traffic lanes, prolonged river navigation bans and road closures would trigger severe municipal penalties and paralyze local transport.
Shijie Heavy Industry engineered an end-to-end modular solution centered on precision-machined transverse diaphragms and orthotropic steel decks. Using 3D laser-tracker continuous shop trial fit-ups and automated twin-wire submerged arc welding, Shijie controlled box girder cumulative camber and twist within ±1.5 mm. Delivered in rigid, counterweighted seaworthy cradles with clear positioning indexing, the steel segments were lifted and pinned seamlessly over water and live traffic without a single flame cut, allowing the bridge superstructure to close 20 days ahead of the monsoon flood season.

Continuous Multi-Segment Shop Pre-Assembly
Segmental joints were trial-matched in sequential three-girder batches in-shop using 3D coordinate scanning, guaranteeing zero air-gap mismatches during river crane lifts.
Orthotropic Fatigue-Resistant Deck
Full-penetration U-rib to deck-plate welding executed with deep robotic penetration (>80%), fully eliminating fatigue cracking under recurring extreme axle loads.
High-Thermal Stability & Solar-Reflective Coating
Applied specialized high-solar-reflectance (SRI) polyurethane topcoats to suppress structural temperature differentials across box girder webs, curbing sun-induced thermal bending.
Zero-Rework Airway & Waterway Safety
Fully bolted longitudinal web splices and precision transverse pin-holes eliminated field cutting and grinding directly over live traffic and navigational channels.
Turning Site Challenges into Engineered Certainty
Proven technical interventions to keep your project on spec, on budget, and on schedule
Floating crane lifting over active river currents risks collision if girder splices take too long to bolt up.
Integrated chamfered locator guide-pins and multi-tier temporary slotted brackets, allowing 60-ton girders to self-center and lock within 15 minutes of positioning.
Scorching Mesopotamian solar radiation creates significant vertical and horizontal thermal deflection between girders during day-time fit-up.
Provided customized site temperature-correction compensation curves; scheduled precise night-time/dawn bolt tightening windows synchronized with factory camber records.
Long-distance multimodal sea-river-land logistics can easily warp thin-walled box sections during tie-down and lifting.
Installed heavy-gauge internal temporary spider-frame bracing and customized non-marking lifting spreader beams, ensuring zero geometric cross-section distortion upon arrival.
Anyone who builds bridges over major waterways knows that girder lifting hours feel like walking a razor's edge. Your floating cranes are swaying on the river current, and every extra minute in the air risks crew safety and blocks regional navigation. Beneath the overpass spans, city traffic is diverted under strict police curfews—if a 60-ton box girder hangs there and the bolt holes don't match, requiring torches and grinders, the authorities and the client will bring the project to a screaming halt.
When Shijie Heavy Industry’s box girders arrived, our QA/QC inspectors checked every flange and web with total station scanners—the diagonals and joint tolerances were held within 1.5 millimeters across the board. The real magic happened during mid-river closure: the floating crane lowered the final girder, the guide pins engaged, and the bolt holes aligned instantly without swinging a single sledgehammer or striking an arc. The load transfer was done in hours. Topping out the bridge 20 days ahead of the seasonal river floods was an absolute lifesaver. Shijie’s fabrication precision saved this project.
