Pre-Engineered Buildings

Z-Section Purlins

Z-section purlins cold-formed from galvanised strip for portal frame roofs and walls, punched to the cleat and sag rod pattern on your drawings and supplied with sag rods, bridging and cleats. Lapped at the supports so multi-span roofs act continuous and use less steel.

Z purlins lap at the supports and act as continuous members over multiple spans, which is why they are the default for multi-span portal frame roofs. Depth, thickness and lap length follow the span, spacing and wind uplift in your design; we propose the section from those inputs rather than defaulting to one.

Holes for cleats, laps and sag rods are punched on the line, so the purlin arrives ready to bolt. Sag rods, bridging, cleats and fasteners are bundled with the purlins — purlins delivered without their bridging is one of the most common causes of site delay in this category.

Advantages vs Engineering Considerations

AdvantagesEngineering Considerations
Continuous over the supportsLapped Z sections act continuous on multi-span roofs, reducing purlin weight compared with simple spans.Best suited to single-storey and low-rise buildings; multi-storey floors or heavy mezzanines call for a braced or moment frame instead.
Punched to the drawingCleat, lap and sag rod holes are punched on the roll-forming line to the drawing pattern, not drilled on site.Column-free spans increase rafter depth and foundation reactions; very long spans may be more economical as trusses or space frames.
Bridging in the bundleSag rods, bridging, cleats and bolts are kitted per roof plane so nothing is short on site.Frames are sized to the stated crane duty and loads; a later change of crane class or roof equipment needs a design check.
Galvanised stripFormed from galvanised strip to ASTM A653 or the EN equivalent; coating class stated on the material certificate.Cold-formed purlins and girts reach their design capacity only with correct cladding fixing and bracing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Z or C purlins — which should we specify?

Z sections lap at the supports and act continuous, which suits multi-span roofs and saves steel. C sections suit single spans, end bays and wall girts where lapping is not possible. Send the span, spacing and wind uplift and we propose the section rather than defaulting to one.

Yes — sag rods, ties and bridging are quoted as part of this sub-system. Purlins delivered without their bridging is one of the most common causes of site delay in this category.

Yes. Send the rafter spacing, cleat details and the roof and wall layout; purlins are punched to the existing cleat pattern and bundled per plane.

Nested and strapped in bundles per roof plane with edge protection, then loaded into the web grooves of the main H-beams so the 40HC space is used rather than shipped empty.

The section is selected from the span, spacing and loads in your design and issued as a purlin schedule with the quotation; we do not quote a catalogue size without the loads.

Yes. We quote sub-systems separately where the scope makes sense — for example secondary framing or bracing against an existing structure. Send the BOQ and connection details of the receiving structure so the interfaces are engineered rather than assumed.

Whichever your design specifies. Design intent to AISC 360 or Eurocode 3 (EN 1993), execution to EN 1090-2 EXC2 under certificate 2787-CPR-01627.

Never without written approval. If a specified section has a long lead time we propose the alternative with the calculation showing equivalence, and you decide.

Mill test certificates per heat, WPS/PQR, welder qualification certificates, NDT reports with technician level, and coating thickness records against the specified ISO 12944 system.

The standard cycle for a single-building scope is 40 to 50 days: 1–2 weeks to shop drawings for your approval, then 4–5 weeks for procurement, fabrication, coating and loading.
